Exercise after spider vein treatment

Spider veins, though pesky and unattractive, are easily treated in the comfort of my Albuquerque vein clinic. Many of my physically active patients are hesitant, however, to schedule treatments, as they don’t want to interrupt their various exercise and training programs. However, sclerotherapy (the gold standard for spider vein treatment) only requires that patients don’t exercise, work out or do anything that may significantly elevate your heart rate for at least 24 hours after each procedure, and “pounding” activity (running, high impact aerobics, etc.) should be avoided for 7 days. Beyond this, your normal activities are fine. So, if you do work out, we ask that you do so the day before your treatment, or even the morning of, and then plan on taking a day off in between your next work-out, as long as it doesn’t involve “pounding”, which can be resumed the following week.

Running and any type of exercise involving use of your legs, is not only good for your general health, but these types of activities also assist your body in properly pumping blood through your veins, thus slowing any possible development of vein disease.

Long-lasting results for spider veins

The weather is heating up and, no doubt, many women are trying to stay cool while trying not to draw attention to their pesky spider veins. Modern spider vein treatment can be done very effectively, with long lasting results, if diagnosed and performed correctly. Many of my patients at my Albuquerque Vein Center want to know if their spider veins will “come back”.

If you have a series of treatments (average patients can take 3-5) at my Albuquerque vein clinic, you should have permanent results in those treated veins. However, most people are genetically pre-disposed to vein problems so it is possible to develop new spider/varicose veins.

That said, most people have had veins developing for many years before they seek initial treatment. Most people don’t wait that amount of time before seeking future treatments – they want to stay on top of it. Typically sclerotherapy results are 70-80% clearing for a series of treatments.

Vein Health Documentary Airs March 13th

KAET-TV, the Phoenix PBS affiliate, will air the ACP sponsored documentary “Vein Health: Discoveries, New Technologies and Breakthroughs,” next Tuesday March 13, 2012 at 7pm.

Nearly a year in the making, the documentary is the result of hard work and many late nights by the ACP Public Education Committee under the leadership of Diana Neuhardt; host Dr. Helane Fronek; the distinguished panel of physicians, including Drs. Melvin Rosenblatt, Stephanie Dentoni, Lowell Kabnick, Nick Morrison, and Steve Zimmet; as well as a generous grant from the ACP Foundation.

For those outside of the Phoenix area, the documentary will also stream via the internet on the newly redesigned ACP public awareness website at www.healthyveins.org.
